The objective of “Set in Venice” is to float a simulacrum of a man
on the brink and Venice on the brink.
The "brinkman" is the character “Gentile,” more crasher than host of
his Venetian Carnival costume party, the setting of the play. He gives
the company “The Tour,” a slide show of iconic scenes (real and
imagined) associated with the City of Water/Queen of the Adriatic. Set
to music commissioned by “Gentile” for the party, "The Tour" is an
audible backdrop in motion. While three live performers channel
larger-than-life images on the rear projection screen containing "The
Tour," interventions by composer Randy Chiurazzi as "Maestro" supply more cues for them to accept or
reject. Rhythmic and arrhythmic choreographies among performers,
composer and "The Tour" play with and against the nostalgic desire of
"Gentile" for high-culture narratives.
We want to stage “Set in Venice” in a museum (somewhere), but we rule out nothing.
One possibility is the downtown branch of the Museum of the Contemporary Art San Diego (see sample budget).
A videographer will document a performance. Relaxing during the intermezzo on MCASD's second-floor
terrace with views of channeling Amtrak lines, spectators will be invited to compare the experience with
palazzo views of the Grand Canal.
The enjoyment of Prosecco is another objective. Greg has tasted 55 brands, but more research is necessary.
With our contribution to “Save Venice,” the production gives back
to its benefactor, which counts as another simulacrum, for its costume party, as well
as being a casus belli for "Gentile," is held to raise funds for the City of
Water/Queen of the Adriatic.
Free tickets will go to patrons arriving in reasonable facsimiles
of Venetian gondolas.
