SEP 27, 2010 - Christian Andreas Doppler dies in Venice, in 1853.

News flash, courtesy of one of our reporters in the field: Christian Andreas Doppler is buried in Venice. Alerted, composer Chiurazzi, a mental picture of his sound design approaching, then moving away from, his mental picture of the late Herr Doppler’s tomb on the Venetian island cemetery of San Michele, remarks, “Perfect! Why wasn’t I informed sooner? Of course we’ll give the people the Doppler effect!”

MAY 01, 2010 - "Set in Venice" donors reported missing.

Search party has not given up hope.

APR 15, 2010 - Hohman and Chiurazzi cruise Italy’s Dolomites for donors.

MAR 17, 2010 - La Jolla Playhouse blows off "Gary."

“‘Gary’?” commented “Set in Venice” playwright Greg Hohman when reached for comment about the form letter. “I admit to dreaming about a nom de plume, but ‘Gary’?!…”

MAR 06, 2010 - Big Art Group (NYC) and Stone Soup Theatre Co. (San Diego) to stage “Set in Venice”? No, not yet.

Email of inquiry sent to each. Previous calls and emails to Stone Soup were met with stony silence. Exact same (non-)response from San Diego theatres not with the word stone in their names.

FEB 13, 2010 - “Beauty and the Beast” is the theme of this year’s Gran ballo della Cavalchina at Teatro La Fenice, Venezia.

MAY 2009 - Catch-22!

Three foundations in San Diego rule “Set in Venice” ineligible for funding consideration because they see it as based in New York City, the home of the play’s fiscal sponsor Fractured Atlas, and they support only SD projects. In a related pickle, a NYC foundation rules “Set in Venice” ineligible for potential monies because it sees the project as based in San Diego and it supports only NYC projects.

MAY 2008 - Set in Venice” receives gift of St. Mark’s Square pigeon feather.

"If it can be worked into a costume or the set design, it will be,” said a source close to the project.

AUG 2005 - Script entitled “High and Dry in Venice” (now destroyed) gets a reading in a rented space at San Diego Rep.

Footnote: In a 2010 survey about that heady day, a volunteer reader remembered only a recipe from the after-party.

Chiurazzi and Hohman are pleasantly surprised to learn they are both from Pittsburgh – unpleasantly surprised that they are from neighboring suburbs that view each other with suspicion.
